This is the process of creating a healthy self-esteem. But what happens when that process is disrupted and the child becomes to view themselves as not good enough? In Laura’s case, this self-doubt became evident in high school, but likely started well before then She had a hard time fitting in, finding her niche and getting connected. As a result, she bowed to peer pressure and followed her friends that were experimenting with drugs. Laura’s lack of confidence, her inability to develop a healthy self-esteem lead her right into the behaviors that created her addictive behavior.

However, the science behind how the brain functions, the statistics on the genetic link in those that become addicted, and the opinions of experts who have studied addiction has changed my mind on this issue. Having said that, the debate over whether addiction is a disease or choice is a hot topic among parents and loved ones who are trying to make sense over the path that their friend or family member is following in the pursuit of substances despite increasingly negative consequences.

For the people who love and care about them, establishing and enforcing healthy boundaries can be a challenge.1 The process can be painful and guilt-inducing. When a person with an addiction is struggling, those closest to them are often willing to allow otherwise problematic behaviors in order to help their loved one find their way. Unfortunately, this often means letting the person "cross the line" when it comes to certain completely inappropriate behaviors."In her article, Dr. Hartney discusses the common difficulties for boundaries and addiction, and provides principles for setting good boundaries.Read the Article

Friends, family, and even coworkers can feel hurt or confused, or unsure whether they should intervene or let a person work out their own problems. They might talk themselves out of taking action, convincing themselves it’s just their imagination, or rationalizing that a person has to “hit rock bottom” before they will change. This simply isn’t true. When people minimize the effects of substance use, no one wins. Though problematic alcohol use can be a complex disorder, there are common signs and behaviors that indicate your friend or loved one has a problem and needs help."Read the Article

They may feel that addiction is a myth and they can quit any time they want or that they are an exception to the rule. This can also occur with behavioral addictions involving activities such as eating, sex, gambling, shopping, and exercise. Learning how to overcome an addiction is important for anyone experiencing a substance use disorder (SUD), alcohol use disorder (AUD), or behavioral addiction. While challenging, recognizing that there is a problem and learning more about the process of quitting are important first steps in recovery."In her article, Dr. Hartney explains how making the decision to change may not be an easy process, or a quick one, but is essential to overcoming addiction.Read the Article
