Teachers have the opportunity to identify students who are at risk for addiction if they understand the warning signs. Children that are struggling with adverse childhood experiences, have difficulty controlling their emotions, and have learning differences may be at greater risk for substance abuse and addiction.
In addition, teachers have the opportunity to educate students about the disease and the risks that a student faces if they use substances before they are 18 years old. They can weave lessons into their regular curriculum that reinforce emotional regulation, making healthy choices, and managing through change.
